"We have before us a game, and of oriental origin - chess. Everything that happens on stage is associated with a chess game with its own strategy and intrigue. This is emphasized by the laconic scenographic solution of the stage designer Zinovy Margolin - the stage features giant fantasy chess pieces of white and green color (a symbol of Islam?), resembling a king, rook, knight, pawn, etc., and the stage curtain is executed in the form of a black and white chessboard. These figures clearly symbolize the characters of the opera, moving around the stage, depending on the circumstances, either on their own or pulled by the participants in the performance. In the course of the action they are sometimes modified, serving as props (a bathtub where Mustafa lounges, or a ship for the escape of the Italians from captivity. Pisarev and Margolin are not afraid to emphasize the chess motif - already quite obvious - with the help of a chess table with small pieces standing in the corner. It's as if the directors are reminding us: don't look for anything superfluous and allegorical, everything is transparent! And... conventionally - no palace with its luxurious chambers, no seashore, no ship - everything that is indicated in the composer's remarks. All the necessary operatic oriental luxury (you can't do without it!) is concentrated in bright motley costumes (Victoria Sevryukova), cut with a reasonable measure of generalized imagery that does not encroach on precise ethnography.
This solution is one of the most fruitful ways for the stage realization of classical opera. It is equidistant both from the dusty routine of operatic naturalism and from radical actualization".
